Reports To: Head teacher
Hours: Mon-Fri: 7:30am-4:00pm (or flexi time if approved by line manager)
Saturday: 8:30am-1:00pm (twice per month)

Position Summary:

At Uganda Hands for Hope, we are developing a programme for children with disabilities, to support some of the most vulnerable children in the Namuwongo slum. We have already made progress in this area but need to recruit a specialist to take this to the next level.

We are recruiting a teacher with expertise of working with children with disabilities. The main objectives of the role will be to develop the children with disabilities programme, to teach a small group of children with disabilities in our nursery school and to run support groups for children with disabilities. The post is for a six month period (initially).

Essential Responsibilities of the Position

• Represent Uganda Hands for Hope in the most positive manner with all children, parents, visitors, staff and the community we serve.
• Uphold the Mission of Uganda Hands for Hope: to help Uganda’s poorest help themselves by providing long term sustainable opportunities through education, small loans and skills training.
• Maintain confidentiality of all information gained from working with Uganda Hands for Hope. Handle Information with sensitivity, tact and discretion.

Uganda Hands for Hope has a strict Child Protection Policy which all staff must adhere to and all new staff must provide human resources documentation required as per the UHfH Child Protection Policy.

Areas of Responsibility and Key Tasks

Under the guidance and supervision of the Head teacher, ensure the following objectives are met in each of the following areas:

Programme development

• Develop a thorough understanding of the needs of children with disabilities that UHfH supports and develop a programme which supports them to have their needs met
• Develop a short and long term plan for the children with disabilities programme, which ensures that the needs of children with disabilities and their parents are met
• Develop partnerships with relevant organisations to support UHfH’s work in this area (e.g. schools, community based organisations, NGOs)
• Deliver staff training on working with children with disabilities as and when required


• Planning, teaching and class management
• Teach a small class of children with disabilities in UHfH’s nursery every morning
• Develop written, formal plans for each week’s class in advance, stating daily class objectives
• Provide clear structure for lessons, maintaining pace, motivation and challenge
• Ensure effective teaching and best use of available time
• Use a variety of teaching methods to encourage child-centred learning
• Monitor, assess and record pupils’ progress
• Prepare termly reports for each pupil and communicate the content to parents individually before the end of term.
• Submit lesson plans and assessments at the management’s request, and at each Monday meeting.
• Keep an up-to-date record of pupil attendance.
• Maintain an up-to-date personal information file on all pupils.
• Meet on a regular basis with the other teachers to discuss issues, plans and concerns regarding teaching and classroom environment.
• Develop and run afternoon educational support groups for children with disabilities who are not in nursery school
• Assist in Saturday Reading Club and Holiday Programme as scheduled.

Meal Times, Play Times, and After School

• Ensuring the health and safety of children and staff is maintained during all activities, both inside and outside the nursery.
• Actively supervise children during meals and play time.
• Keep account of any accidents and injuries which occur during the children’s time within Uganda Hands for Hope care.
• Ensure children’s hygiene is maintained while at school particularly during toilet and meal times.
• Serve the children’s breakfast and lunch in a fair and hygienic manner.
• Supervise the children during playtime paying particular attention to the children using the play ground equipment.

Community Development/ Child Sponsorship

• Support the outreach team in supporting the children with disabilities and their families. This could include:

- Supporting the children with disabilities parents support group
- Conducting regular family visits / assessments of children with disabilities
- Supporting the delivery of community awareness events in the area of disability
- Ensuring that the child profiles are kept in an organised manner and updated on a regular basis

Person specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

- A recognised teaching qualification (preferably a grade 5 diploma in special education)
- A thorough understanding of cognitive and physical disabilities and how they affect a person’s development and education
- An understanding of provision and support organisations available for children with disabilities within Kampala and the surrounding area
- A thorough understanding of child protection policy and practice.


- Experience of teaching and supporting children with disabilities ina classroom and one-to one setting
- Experience of running educational support groups for children with disabilities
- Experience of community outreach work with vulnerable children and their families (desirable)


- Project and programme planning skills, including developing projects plans
- Facilitation, teaching and training skills working with children and adults
- Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to develop relationships and partnerships
- Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal and listening skills
- IT skills
- Ability to work as part of a team, as well as take individualinitiative

Uganda Hands for Hope (UHfH) is a registered non-profit organisation based in Namuwongo, Kampala. UHfH was founded in 2008 supporting and educating 9 children. By 2014 it has grown to educate and support over 300 children and their families, as well as running numerous programmes to support the community as a whole.

UHfH works with the most vulnerable children and families who live in temporary urban settlements, especially from the Namuwongo slum. We operate a nursery school and support children to attend local primary and secondary schools. The child sponsorship programme is run in conjunction with other programmes which focus on the areas of education, livelihoods and health.
